Edwards and Frazier receive Provost’s Awards for Excellence

Alison Edwards and Katharine Frazier

Congratulations to Alison Edwards and Katharine Frazier, who have each been recognized with the annual Provost’s Unit Awards for Excellence. The awards represent NC State’s highest honor for non-faculty members. An awards ceremony, originally scheduled for April 21, has been postponed to the fall.

In her nomination letter for Katharine, Hilary Davis wrote about her problem-solving initiative. Hilary described Katharine’s suggestion for a change to the form on which patrons can suggest materials to add to the Libraries’ collections, including the option for patrons to choose to remain anonymous for privacy concerns. Katharine worked with the Web Team to implement the idea and, since then, suggestions for items about potentially sensitive topics have increased significantly.

“Katharine is a valuable colleague who spots opportunities to make our work more efficient, cost-effective, and therefore, more valuable,” Hilary wrote. “Combining her initiative and her ability to learn technical skills and apply them to our work, she truly embodies the Libraries’ vision to serve as NC State’s competitive advantage.”

In nominating Alison, who serves as a University Library Specialist, Anne Burke wrote about Alison’s commitment to NC State’s students and her role as the Libraries liaison to the First Year Writing Program: “From her work in the classroom helping students start on their first research assignments, to her role as supervisor and mentor to dozens of student employees, to her advocacy for open pedagogy, Alison places students front and center in her daily work.”

Anne also noted Alison’s contributions behind the Ask Us desk, particularly in hiring and mentoring student workers. “Alison helps make the experience of working in the library one that leaves our student workers better equipped for their careers after college,” Anne wrote. “Our student graduates tell us how valuable the skills they learned while working in the Libraries have proven in a variety of career tracks.”

Congrats again to Alison and Katharine for this noteworthy recognition!
